Linden Unified Graduate Success Stories… Mendy Slaton
It is truly exciting to hear about graduates from Linden Unified and what they are doing today! Mendy Slaton is definitely a wonderful example of a student who has gone on to make Linden proud. Mendy attended Glenwood School, starting in Kindergarten and continued through Linden HS and graduated in 2005. While in high school, she was active in sports, ACE, Leadership, FFA and was the Linden Cherry Festival Queen. Mendy graduated as one of the valedictorians for the class of 2005 and went on to earn two Bachelors of Arts degrees from University of the Pacific – one in International Relations & Global Studies and the second in Spanish Language, Literature, Culture, and Civilizations. While studying at Pacific, Mendy participated in the “Study Abroad” program where she immersed herself in Madrid, Spain, taking classes at Universidad Carlos III and perfecting her Spanish speaking skills. Later, Mendy returned to Spain, this time to Barcelona, where she earned her Masters at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in the area of International Relations, Security, and Development. She also lived in Paraguay where she worked for a non-profit that specialized in poverty reduction.
Mendy returned to California, making her home in San Francisco where she first worked for the Academy of Arts University, then moved into the competitive tech world as a Recruitment Manager at Betts Recruiting. Her outstanding work ethic, people skills and leadership earned her the opportunity to be selected by the company to start the first international office for Betts Recruiting in Dublin, Ireland. In Europe she helped build Silicon Valley startups scale across EMEA.
Due to Mendy’s highly competent abilities and recruiting knowledge she was contacted by a company called GitHub to work with them as a Talent Acquisition Specialist. GitHub is a progressive tech firm empowering developers to build better software, together. GitHub is a tool for developers to collaborate on projects and is currently the world's largest host for code repositories. Today, Mendy is responsible for finding talented people within the tech industry who can bring their skills and expertise to GitHub.
Mendy has fond memories of attending Linden schools. She states “Linden allowed me the opportunity to explore it all. Science Olympiads, Spelling Bee's, sports, ACE, FFA, Rocket Club, Leadership, and serve as the Delegate for Girls State. The point is that I'm no astronaut or professional singer/dancer, but because I had the opportunity to experience anything I wanted to try out in Linden, it helped build character and taught me a lot about life in general.” Congratulations, Mendy! You make LUSD proud!
